Senior TrottersThe Senior Trotters take monthly day trips to points of interest all over Northern Vermont with occasional forays into New Hampshire. Each trip includes lunch and transportation. Our average and median age is 81. There are a few two-generation Trotters, mostly daughters in their 60’s who come with their mothers. Some Trotters never miss a trip, and others join us depending on their interest in particular events or on their ability to handle the venue. Our Program Director pre-trips all events to insure that they are accessible, but some trips require more standing than others. Theater is probably the most popular event. Lake cruises and museum visits may require more mobility than trips to the Flynn or Opera House. A few years ago, the Trotters had a tour of Hope Cemetery in Barre, which was led by an Italian Stone Cutter. Our agile Trotters loved that unusual trip! Winter events are all scheduled close to home.
The Senior Trotter Program has several benefits for its participants. It is a chance for some and an important opportunity for all to get out and socialize with friends. It keeps minds active and interested in a wide variety of activities. It gives people something to look forward to, which is extremely important. Certain matinees happen only on Sundays, and church attendance is noticeably down on those days—priorities. We have recently increased our trip fees to $15 and have kept them low to include everyone who wants to participate. The Program has started quite a network. There are 147 Trotters now, and we do look out for each other.
